Teaching learners to be self-directed. Assim, a seguir, tentarei elucidar o modelo.
Enfim, a mágica aconteceu.
Do you want students with autonomy? The way is Student Centered Learning approach!
Some statements need time to be completely understood. Paulo Freire, for instance, said: "Teaching is not to transfer knowledge, but to create possibilities for the production or the construction of knowledge". I believe, today, I got what he said.In my studies at Häme University of Applied Sciences, in VET Teachers for the Future Program, Professor Essi Ryymin presented me the graph below. It was discussed in classroom with other teacher colleagues, in an attempt to understand what it means. However, only after my own personal experience applying Student Centered Learning approach, when I changed my teacher behavior, I related my studies in Finland with Paulo Freire's wise words.
This picture was inspired by the study "Grow, G. (1991). Teaching learners to be self-directed. Adult Education Quartely, 41, 125-149, which brings, in my point of view, a simple proposition: teacher's behavior affects the student's behavior. Thus, I am going to try to clarify this model.
If teacher is "authority" (according to the model), recognized by to define everything that a student must do, for instance, establishing date, time, place and mainly the way to do the learning assessment, then he/she put many limitations to possibilities to production and/or construction of knowledge by a student. Therefore, we may hope dependent students, who will try to answer what they think that the teacher wants, in place what they have learned.
In this context, I'd like to raise two questions: 1) Are Multiple Choice Exams suitable to acess the knowledge developed by students? 2) Is it a pedagogical approach focused on student development or in bureaucracy of teaching practice?
Naturally, change a teacher's behavior is not easy. We are afraid of changes, teacher and student. The first one may be concerned about bureaucracy and if he/she might have freedom (autonomy?) to adopt an alternative pedagogical approach regarding the current way of teach. The second one has no idea about how to present answers in this new learning scenario. Because of that, it is really important that teacher uses the compliments and positive psychology. These two tools will help him/her to create a suitable environment and well-being where student may feel comfortable to try something new. Teacher should also be available to listen what a student has to say, not only about content, but also about life and dreams. It will be the "Motivator", who will have students interested in to produce and to share knowledge.
Once again, some question to guide reflexions: 1) Does the teacher have autonomy to run his/her pedagogical tasks or the rules and bureaucracy limit his/her job? 2) What is the main objective of education: to develop people or to solve questions from exams?
Teaching a classroom full of students, a set made of different individuals with their own requirements, it is a challenge. Teacher should perceive none student is equal to other and then adjust his/her way of teach for each individual. Sometimes, a student have special needs and teacher has to ask help to other professionals (psychologists, social service ans other). However, teaching a classroom full of committed students is a challenge much bigger. Frequently, they are going to apply their knowledge anytime, anywhere. Every day, they will bring more and more questions to be solved while they are guided by the teacher. They will bring genuine questions in place of those that can be solved with Google search tool. The Magic happened and the teacher just have to guide students throughout the pathway of knowledge production.
Finally, we reach the teacher as a "Supervisor". Students shall act as self-directed learners. They will actively learn and they will be happy to show what they learned. Because of that, proudly, I'd like to present for you some authentic competence demonstrations made by students under my supervision. They are about Cell Biology (GIFs using Pivot Animator app (http://pivotanimator.net/)) and Botany (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylHUk-3jWYE&sns=fb).
It is Student Centered Learning approach. I lived it in two different perspectives and it was amazing. First, as a student at HAMK. Second, as a teacher at IFRO. So, Student Centered Learning approach is education for the future. It is #EDU4F
